Online Tour of Bob Ross Senior Services Center - San Antonio

Bob Ross Senior Services Center - San Antonio
I checked out the Bob Ross Senior Services Center and decided it was so nice that it needs its own blog post...

When I first entered the center, I was greeted by two men that just made me smile.  They are elderly veterans who were sitting up front watching TV and greeting everyone as they came and left.  So friendly!

Reception Desk
All the staff at the reception desk were equally as welcoming.

The building and facilities are gorgeous!  And it's all **FREE** to seniors 60+ years.

Their website is a little lacking in photos and fun. So I thought I'd post photos and more information for those looking to use the center.

Library
Enrique at the reception desk had me sign in under Tour/Info.  Then he walked me around the facility.

First we saw the library, which had books and magazines, and a couple of customers.

(I tried not to take photos of the seniors for privacy reasons)

Exercise Class Room
We walked around and saw a few administrative offices/rooms until we got to the exercise room where a Tai Chi class was about to start.

Pool
Their pool is used for water aerobics classes only - no free swim.  And  you do have to sign up on the waiting list since there's a 5-6 week wait to get in a class.

Photos of aquatic classes
My camera work on this wall hanging was not great, but you can kind of see the happy people taking the aquatic classes.

Activity Room
Then I saw some empty rooms since the main event was happening elsewhere.

They do arts and crafts, sewing, quilting, and fiber arts.

Man, I can't wait til I'm old enough to join.  But by that time, we'll probably have flying cars and hovercrafts.

Health exam room
They have nurses on site to take measurements such as glucose and cholesterol levels in addition to a list of preventative health offerings.

Computer lab
Their computer lab is open for free use Thursdays and Fridays.  Other days they offer classes like intro to computers, internet and email, and MS Office.

I think more useful classes should be offered like facebook, skype, and digital photography for communicating with their family members.

Then we got to where the action was.  They were setting up for BINGO!

I spoke with a few of the **very friendly** and sociable seniors who were about to play.  They said they go every day to the center and have been going for years.  They love it there!

The big Bingo board where they display the numbers.

I didn't get a good photo of the room since everyone was in it, and I wanted to maintain their privacy.

Here's a sample of the smaller Bingo cards.  They are $0.25 each.

And the large print Bingo cards (same price).

They play for a chance to win a $5 HEB gift card, and of course, bragging rights.

In the same room was a shelf with some games on it.

Piano room

The piano room is where I think my elder companion will have a good time.  Maybe she can teach me to play?

Raised shuffle board (so you don't have to bend over).

Billiards room
The billiards room seemed to have just men in it, but Enrique informed me that the women beat the socks off the men most of the time.

Exercise room
The exercise room has treadmills, resistance weights, elliptical machines and stationary bikes.

Then we ended up back in the lobby, where I was wished a fond farewell and told to drive safely by the two gentlemen greeters.

Thanks, Enrique, for the tour!

I will definitely be bringing my elder companion here.  I think there's such a huge range of activities and friendly faces that she will have a hard time not finding something she'll enjoy doing.

The website does not contain the schedules of events, so I scanned them for you just as an example.

*They will probably be out of date when you read this, but are there for example.*

So many activities!

I give the Bob Ross Senior Services Center 5 buttons up!  I sure hope my elder companion will, too!

  1. Thanks for posting on this center. San Antonio has so many things to offer to various people and many of them are 'hidden gems'. Did your elder companion like it after all? A different age group... toddlers....benefit from free toddler time at most san antonio libraries.... San Antonio is a GREAT town!

  2. I'm glad you could benefit from the post. My elder companion is not quite ready for the senior center after all. She gets nervous with new places because of her dementia. *Maybe* we can get her there for the lunch.

  3. My mom goes there and has for years! Loves that place! So many people having a great time. As for dementia... there are many that have it there to different degrees. But interaction is key to delaying it's progress, so don't delay long. Good luck and thanks for posting about the center!
